Description:
Two months after an EF-5 tornado devastated nearly one third of the city, Joplin residents came together to create this magical evocation of a community rebuilding, remembering, and looking forward. Inspired by the metamorphosis of butterflies, the poetry of Langston Hughes, and the capacity for renewal expressed in the imaginations of children, the mural captures the story of Joplin’s unbroken spirit and hopeful outlook after the storm.

Description:
Situated adjacent to Newton’s historic train depot, The Imagineers was designed and painted by a group of committed local volunteers working in collaboration with the visiting artists. The mural’s focus is a group of Newton area residents, gathered around a table, engaged in the process of recalling and re-imagining their community. Using quilts, model railroads, and board games as metaphors to explore their cultural history and manifest new ideas, the figures at the table are surrounded by symbols of Newton and North Newton including references to: Mennonite and Hispanic heritage, wheat farming, and the Chisholm Trail.

Description:
This is a restoration project of a 1960s street scene mural that was taken down in 2010.

The painted tiles depicted a street scene of Greenock in the days before the construction of the town’s Oak Mall.

Before the initial building work could begin, 6274 Public Art had to take photographs of each section of the underpass mural. There was a large amount of graffiti and damage to the tiles which had to be digitally touched up. The next stage was to hand illustrate the street scene as close as possible to the original.

Once completed a few modern Greenock landmarks were added, including references to the Tall Ships Festival, Clydeport Cranes and the soon-to-be constructed Beacon Theatre.

Once the artwork was approved by Riverside Inverclyde the street scene was ready to be transferred onto full colour, frost and fade resistant graphic tiles. Once fired in a kiln at 800 degrees, the glaze set and the tiles were inspected.

Only after each tile was fully approved were they individually numbered and packaged for installation.

The public response after Installation has been fantastic. The shops and business depicted in the mural take people back to a time when the high street was made up of local stores and not big companies.

Description:
Created for the wall behind the outdoor stage at Campbell Plaza, this design was developed around the ideas of mentorship and creative exploration. The composition is divided into a brightly lit and colorful ‘center stage’ and shadowed more monochromatic areas ‘off stage – waiting in the wings.’ Framing the mural on the left and right are representations of theater curtains. The young boy on the right and girl on the left seated in chairs are adapted from the relief above the the entryway to Lincoln School.

They are mentored/inspired/ guided by teachers who help them along as they develop their art. Accompanying these figures ‘waiting in the wings’ are other figures walking along high wires of artistic exploration. At the edge of the light and shadowed areas of the design, there appear new much larger representations the boy and girl as they cross over onto the lit ‘stage’ with tools of self expression. The center ‘stage’ section of the mural is based on a detail of a tile relief on the United Building designed by Charles Shaver.

Meant to convey a sense of dynamic beauty and possibility, the large shapes of the tilework are divided by emanating rings of light that originate from the act of artistic creation within the boy and girl. Behind and above the tilework are references to the city waterworks and one Salina’s majestic grain elevators.

Description:
The mural named “Birds on a Wire” was painted at the Fridge Art Gallery located in Washington DC. This mural is part of Albus Cavus Classrooms program.

“Birds on a Wire” mural is based on the tattoo of Nicole Puzan. Nicole was an accomplished artist with a BFA in crafts/material studies from Virginia Commonwealth University. Most recently she worked as the studio manager/artist-in-residence at the Washington Glass School and was the part time assistant to Novie Trump at Flux Studios. In January she was diagnose with Stage III-C Ovarian Cancer. The Washington Glass School’s much loved glass studio coordinator passed away on December 11th. Only 28 years old, Nicole succumbed to a very aggressive ovarian cancer.

Lead artists Nicole and Decoy with the help of several assistant students were able to paint the mural in a short amount of time. This mural is only temporary.

Description:
In this, the seventh panel on the Great Wall, lead artist Ashley Laird worked with local artists, arts advocates and neighborhood residents on mural that celebrates the heritage and continued vitality of Topeka’s creative community. With looming cuts to arts spending in Kansas and across the nation, the theme of this mural is especially relevant. This mural focuses attention on the brilliant arts community taking shape here by highlighting Final Fridays, NOTO, reThink Topeka, and the countless other arts offerings sprouting up around town, while also looking back at the many individual artists and organizations that have nourished and inspired its development.

Description:
Employing an intensive community-based process, local volunteers teamed up with the visiting artists to research, design, and help paint this sprawling visual poem honoring Tonkawa’s cultural history and dreams of things to come. The resulting mural, divided into five interrelated panels, reflects the community’s continuing dialogue with its past including: the Cherokee Land Run and its effects on the Tonkawa Tribe, current efforts to revitalize downtown, and whimsical visions of future community-building endeavors.

A crucial factor to the settlement of the Wiregrass area was safety. Until the construction of Fort Scott, erected on the banks of the nearby Flint River, settlers steered clear of the Creeks and Red Sticks who roamed the area. This mural is a fitting testament to hard work, dedication and progress.
